Shark Tank Skirt
When a friend gave me this boring sweater tank, I held on to it for a while. ”Meh…it’ll be okay for work.” (transl. : ”This is really boring!”), I thought. Of course, I really don’t dress like a proper grownup at work, so this boring tank went completely unworn. :/
Meh.
I recently scored a sweet sequined tank that didn’t work with anything in my wardrobe, so I decided to turn this tank into a cute miniskirt to pair it with! 🙂
First, I made a big chop, with the help of Mr. Spock!
I couldn’t have done it without him! 🙂
Then, I pinned that top raw edge under twice…
Pin it!
and stitched it down, leaving a small gap at the end.
Whirrrrrr!!!!
I took a length of elastic and threaded it through the gap into the casing.
This little doohicky is called a bodkin, and it pretty much rocks. 🙂
Then, I stitched it together!
Almost done!
And that’s all it takes to make a quick & cute miniskirt from an unwanted tank top! 🙂
And it looks swell with my sparkly top! 🙂
You can’t really tell what to top of my skirt looks like with that long sparkly tank over it, so here’s a closer look!
It’s just a simple elastic waist, y’all! 🙂
I wore my cute new skirt to a fun party with friends. For some reason we all piled into the bathroom (what???) to snap a pic! 🙂
I mean it is a rather large bathroom…
Such a fun time! 🙂
Just chillin’ by the AC unit…like ya do!

Looking fabulous as usual, Jillian! Skirts from t-shirts or vests work really well for summer and are SO easy and quick to make. And sequins make everything better 😉
Loving the sparkly top! This skirt is about the extent of my refashioning to date… easy peasy stuff that you would normally throw away! Great work!
Once, again you pulled it off. Like the fact that you used the top to make a simple tube skirt. Cool!

I have my mother’s Kenmore from the 70′s and it’s what I grew up sewing on….lacks all the super cool new features, but she can still do some mean button holes and zig zag for hours! Oh yes! I almost forgot, I want to ask you a question. I’ve seen the answer to this on here before but no clue where. How do you keep clothing from looking splotchy when you dye it? I dyed a school dress for my daughter and it’s splotchy. It was a light blue color dress I ordered from LL Bean for spring pictures and of course she got a stain on it that wouldn’t come off. I used scarlet red rit dye. I put it in the washer in hot water with a cup of salt. I followed the instructions to a tee…or so I thought. For the most part it turned out kind of a darkish pink with red splotches. I really need it to be red because she has to wear certain colored uniforms to school. The fabric is 40% polyester and 60% baumwolle (cotton). I would be so grateful for any advice you may have for me. It is my favorite school dress. The uniforms are so tiring. School shopping is too easy! Lol!
Was the dress fully wetted when you added the dye? Are the splotches where the stain is? I’ve always had a bit of an issue getting Scarlet dye to end up being anything other than coral. I’d toss in a little bit of blue dye for the next go round.
Hmm it may not have been fully wet. The splotches were random, not where the stains were. Thanks so much for tips! I will try again with blue to. You’re genius!
I was very skeptical of this refashion after I saw the before picture. I didn’t think anyone could make that top cute, but of course–I should never doubt you! 🙂
So cute! I have a question – when cutting sweater type fabrics, do you have to do something special to keep them from fraying?
