Violet Femme Dress
Hello there! Sorry for being so long absent. I’ve been extremely busy coughing up my weight in phlegm for the past month. :/ I don’t know or understand the cause of my grody lung gunk funk. But now, it appears that I might actually be getting better! Huzzah! 😀
Of course, the best thing about feeling better and no longer being stuck in bed is getting back to refashioning! 🙂
While digging through my big bin o’ refashionables, I stumbled upon this yellowed white dress that I never managed to get around to revamping over the summer.
As anyone who knows me can attest, I cannot wear white for more than 5 minutes without spilling something on myself. My day is actually just a long cycle of accidentally sloshing different beverages and sauces upon myself, but luckily my wardrobe consists mostly of dark colors, so ha! It’s my little secret (which I just foolishly shared with all of you). This dress isn’t all bad. I love the pleats, but I don’t like the dropped waist or the length.
I knew I didn’t want to leave this dress white, so I reached for a bottle of blue!
I set up a dye bath in my machine, and let my dress toss around in it for about 45 minutes.
After my dress was dyed & dried, I saw that it actually ended up being more purple than navy. No big. All I wanted was to make it not white, and I like the color purple too.
To fix the length, I made a chop!
Then, my new dress got a new hem!
I’m not done! To give that dropped waist a little more definition, I needed to make something…
I turned my fabric tube right-side-out and then sewed up the ends. After a good press, my new dress is no longer in distress (hot rhyming action!)
I just rolled up the sleeves to take care of their awkward length. Now I’m all set for a lovely & warm afternoon!
Cheers!

So glad you are back! You look well anyway, lovely haircut. I got onto your blog a fortnight ago and love it; you have inspired me to return to my inventive childhood where I was always making something out of nothing. Thank you!
Thanks to Pinterest I franticly went trough all your refashions the last few weeks, pinned a lot for inspiration and was soo disappointed to find out I could’n’t get a daily update anymore as your year already passed… You were the final push to buy that sewing machine and give it a try soon!!! So I am glad you’re back and I love this dress. On the pictures it has a slight denim look by the way which I love.
I adore this! That purple color looks very pretty on you! Great job!
So glad you are feeling better! I love this refashion and may I say that the length on this one looks great… sometimes I feel you go a tad too short…I love seeing all the dyed projects.

This dress re-fashion looks much better the length you made it and the dye job is much better too. Love it!
Happy to hear you’re feeling better. I love this dress and I just wanted to say thank you for helping me realize that I can make cool clothes out of hideous ones. Since I first came to your site last week I’ve refashioned 5 new outfits out of some of my old clothes 🙂

Thanks, Huli! One word. Makeup. ;P
good one!
Is there any type of fabric that you cannot dye with Rit Dye? My friend might dye her old ballet costume (It’s white) but it’s a weird fabric and I’m not sure if it would work to dye it. And what is your dying process?
Thanks so much!
A good rule of thumb is that if it’s natural fiber (like say…cotton), it should take dye just fine. But, if it’s acryllic (like polyester), it won’t take it very well. 🙂
What a pleasant surprise!!! I clicked on my quick button at the top of my browser out of habit, not really expecting to see anything new. So glad you are feeling better & you are still with us!!! We have missed you dearly! Great job on the dress! I love it!
I was having such a frustrating day. I feel so much better now that I read your post. You always cheer me up with your humor and amazing refashions. I love the purple dress. I hope you completely recover soon.

Ha! I freakin’ love it!! It looks amazing on you and the color is fantastic! You’re amazing 🙂
Can you dye any type of cloth with Rit Dye? I have something that I would like to dye (it’s white) but the fabric is really different and I have no idea if it will work. Any tips for that?
Thanks and great refashion today–love it! 🙂
