Christmas Time in ReFashionland!

Merry Christmas, my lovely refashlings (what?)!  After spending much of my holiday time off being ridiculously family oriented, I was thrilled to spend Christmas Night with my best    buds!

I’ve been saving this cute little number just for the occasion!

Are you green with envy? No?

I feel like that dude in Quantum Leap and that I’ve woken up transformed into my terribly dressed 3rd Grade Teacher (I’m judging you, Ms. Coomer) who threw chalk at me once.  It was time to strive to put right what once went wrong, and I hoped that my next leap will be the leap (to my much more fashionable) home.  Unfortunately, I had no witty sidekick…:/

"Sorry Jillian, I'm busy uploading this pic of my cats to Instagram."

“Sorry Jillian, I’m busy uploading this pic of my cats to Instagram.”

Fine, Al.  Whatever.  I’ll go it alone!

First, I got to ripping!  The velvet collar and that fake vest had to go!  I didn’t want to just snip it off, as it would look all frayed and gross.

Seam ripping is a great way to feel useful while watching TV! :)

This left a lot of holes!

Holey Moley!

No biggie!  I just pinned everything back together (sans ugly collar and vest!).

Back together again!

Then I stitched it all back together.

Whirrrrrr!!!!

I wasn’t happy with the fit of my dress, so I took it in a bit on each side.

Just a lil bit! :)

Then, I took off some length!

After a quick press my dress was ready to impress (hot rhyming action!)!

Oh…and check out my fab elfin footwear!  :)

No...I don't speak elvish.

We were all thrilled with our fab White Elephant gifts.

Eh…I was anywho! ;)

Merry Christmas Eve!

Merry Christmas Eve, everybody!  :)  I hope your holiday season has been awesome and spent with the people you love the most!

I was in a festive mood when I picked out this happy red frock:

It even blends in with my curtains!

This dress was a gift from a friend of mine (Hi, Paul!) who though I’d have some fun with it.

It didn’t need much, actually!

Just a snip!

Whew!  Thank goodness for easy refashes!  I had cookies to bake and prezzies to wrap!  :)  I tied on the cute obi belt that came with this dress and was ready to entertain!  :)

My tree isn't pathetic. It's just humble. :)

I spent my Christmas Eve with these two sweet fellas!  :)

So, while the cookies turned into malformed blobs and the weather outside was frightful(ly rainy), we had a terrific time watching movies, playing video games, and nomming on tasty snacks!  :)

Half-Off Day at The Goodwill Clearance Center!

Happy Christmas Eve Eve, Everybody!  :)  Today’s post is dedicated to one of my favorite places to score uber-cheap refashionables…The Goodwill Clearance Center!

Several of you have asked me for more details about this slightly scary place of mystery and wonder.  So, I’m going to take you along!  :)

Goodwill stores are easy to find.  You probably have one in your town.  Buuuuut…Goodwill Clearance Centers aren’t quite as common.  This is the best list I could find of locations.  So, I’m a lucky gal to have one of these dubious treasure troves so very close to me.

In we go!!!

Here’s what it looks like on the inside!

BEHOLD!!!

BEHOLD!!!

Note the complete and utter lack of racks or any sort of organizational system of any kind.  This place isn’t for the faint of heart, friends.

Come in prepared to dig!

Okaaaaay…so this is a slight exaggeration. ;)

Buuuuut…everything is $1 a pound!  EXCEPT on Sundays, when everything is FIFTY CENTS A POUND!!!!!  (Squeeee!)

I recommend wearing gloves.  I’m not kidding.

No Glove, No Love! :)

No Glove, No Love! :)

You think I’m going too far with the glove thing, don’t you?

OH MY GAWD!!!!!! EEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Why yes…that’s a syringe folks.  A flippin’ SYRINGE!!!!!  You never know what you’re going to find in these bins!

Let’s just try to forget about that for now, okay?

I dug in…looking for items that weren’t too stained, weird-smelling, or gross to use.

You'll dye nicely! :)

These clearance centers aren’t just for clothing either.  They are also purveyors of fine reading materials!

This should make for some pleasant holiday reading!

After an hour or so of intense rummaging, I had a big bag ‘o fun stuff!

Huzzah!!!

Huzzah!!!

And what was the price of all this, you ask?

BAM!!!

BAM!!!

Happy Thrifting!  :)

An Over-Oversized Oxford

-I love checking out street fashion blogs to get new ideas.  One of my faves is The Sartorialist.  A trend I started seeing in the summer was the oversized oxford.  I fell in love.

Granted, it’s way to chilly to go bare-legged right now.  Although…if I had legs like blondie here, I’d probably go for it anyways!  :)  I like this look because it’s easy to achieve and it doesn’t have to be pricey.  I mean, anyone can find an oversized oxford at a thrift store right?

Except…I got a little carried away when I was at the $1 a pound Goodwill and went too far. :/

No, Jillian. You're doing it wrong. :(

No, Jillian. You’re doing it wrong. :(

Oversized is cool.  But waaaay too big and boxy is not cool.  On anyone!

I wasn’t giving up!  All this top needed was a quick take-in.

Stitch it!

I actually ended up having to take this shirt in a second time.  No biggie.  It’s always good to err on the side of caution when taking something in as it’s muuuch easier to stitch a new seam than it is to unpick one with your seam ripper.

My new shirt was still pretty wrinkly from the dryer, so I gave it a quick press…

Meet the press!

Meet the press!

…and then I was done!  :)

Voila!

Voila!

I cinched the waist of my new top with a fab obi belt from a dress I have yet to refashion.  This was an uber-budget refash, too!  Not only did I get it from the $1 a pound Goodwill Clearance Center, I got it on their half-off day (huzzah!).  So, I’d guesstimate that this top ended up costing me about a quarter…if that!  :)

Happy with my new top, I headed over to The Whig to attempt outlining some ideas for ReFashionista.net, as well as my other (much-neglected) blog.

The ideas are flowin' like gravy! :)

I had completely forgotten that Wednesday was Trivi-Yeah!  night.  A couple of nice fellas managed to recruit me to their team.  They chose the (wildly inaccurate and possibly cursed) team name, “The Winning Team”.  We were not winners that night, my friends.  :/

We we next to last place when I bailed like a rat from a sinking ship. :/

We were next to last place when I bailed like a rat from a sinking ship. :/

The good news is, I managed to jot lots of sweet new ideas down.  I can’t wait for 2013, when I get to unroll all the fabulousness out for ya!

Until then…

The Cat’s Meow Dress

Woo hoo!  Guess what?  Today’s refash has not one, but TWO starter pieces!

Meet Piece #1:

Like my little tree in the background?

Aaaaand, Piece #2:

Me-Ow! :)

You’ll notice I’m not wearing Piece #2.  Let’s look a little closer at it to see why.

Eeeewwwwww! :(

Eeeewwwwww! :(

That shirt is stained mess of pure grossness!  There was absolutely NO WAY I was slipping into it for a “before” pic.  I hope you understand.

Both of these pieces were $1 apiece.  Even though the shirt was pretty much junk at this point, I just had to have that awesome cat pocket!  :)

Eager to have that nasty thing out of my life, I quickly separated the shirt from the coolest pocket ever.

Pick!

Pick!

I showed it to Spock, who seems to like his new pal!  :)

Now for that dress.  I quickly snipped out these guys:

Then, did a little chopping…

A few of you have asked me how I cut my hems evenly.  Hopefully the above pic is helpful. While cutting, I fold over the cut-off part and use it as a guide.  No extra measuring needed!  :)

I hemmed the bottom raw edge.

Then, I sewed those two side-tie thingies together to make a sash.

Easy!

I’m not done yet!  This dress is looking much cuter now, but it still needs a little pizzazz!

I styled my new dress with this fabulous thrift score I stumbled upon a few weeks ago for only $3.00:

Yep…that’s a sweet vintage Coach Willis Bag, which sells for $298 new!  :)  Can you believe it????  I just hope I didn’t use all my thrifting karma for the year on this one purchase!  :)

I soaked up all that wine with some tasty Bee Bim Bob at Blue Cactus Cafe!  :)  All in all, twas a perfect afternoon!  :)
