Meet Me at the Alamo Drafthouse!

A Halter Dress with Vintage Flair!
Manmosa Dress

On the last day of my trip, I was exhausted.  The heat had completely gotten to me (I thought SC was bad).  Dan kept trying to talk me into leaving the comfort of our air conditioned room, and out into the pizza oven that is Austin in the summertime.

You already know how I’ve fallen deeply in love with Austin, TX thrift stores, especially Texas Thrift Store.  You also know that I chose to pack my sewing machine rather than actual clothes for my trip to Austin.  I needed something extremely light & airy to get me through the day!

I chose this find right here:

Yep. A cow skull. Just chillin' on the wall.

It only ended up costing me $2, as I snagged it on a 1/2 off Yellow Tag sale day!  Not quite as good a deal as I’m used to in Columbia, SC…but it’ll do!  :)

Not bad at 1/2 off!

I like the red hue (It’s a good color for me) and the tropical print of this frock.  I don’t like how shapeless (no waist to speak of) and long it is.  Did I mention I was hot and tired?  Let me reiterate that.  I was hot and tired.  I needed a new dress fast.  No time for dillydallying!

That length had to go!

Chop it off!

The sides of the dress were slitted, so this cut left me with two pieces.  I stitched them together, happy that doing so left me with hemmed edges from the original slits!  :)

I tied my new sash around my waist, and braced myself for the heat outside!

He's robot, but that's ok.

I wore my new dress with my Toms, it was either those or flip-flops.  :)  Dan and I met up with some friends at the Alamo Drafthouse to check out The Big Lebowski Quote-along!  This is the BEST movie theater ever!

Welcome to Paradise!

Not only do they have awesome programming and fun events, they also have table service during the movie!

So you can watch this…

I love this movie! :)

I had SUCH a wonderful time in Austin.  Our hosts were wonderful and it was great getting to meet new friends!  This city is full of youthful optimism, art, great food, and fun!  I look forward to going back…when it’s cooler outside!  ;)

  1. I’m here in Austin, and the heat has completely zapped me out the last few days. I’m glad you enjoyed your time here! Come back in the spring or fall when the weather is a bit nicer. I love the Texas Thrift but I haven’t been there in awhile- it is way down South and I am way up North.

  2. Reminds me of the quote from Steel Magnolias: “It’s like livin’ inside a hair dryer.” I am amazed that there is someplace hotter than Columbia! Kudos for braving the heat and stitching up some cute new duds!

    1. Thank ya! It’s a dry heat too, so you’re constantly chugging water! I think the mild summer we’ve had in SC made me soft.

  3. Everyone from Texas wants to live in Austin. Lucky for me that my daughter lives there. She works at the Belmont, where they film the Austin City Limits shows. You would love it there in November, it’s cool but not too cool.

    1. How awesome to have a place to stay whenever you get a hankering to visit! And what a cool job your daughter has! You must be really proud of her! :)

  4. We love the Alamo! It is the most awesome theater. Austin is miserable hot at least 4 months out of the year. Come back in Feb or March:)

  5. Very clever! You will have to post a picture of Douglas with your new “companion” that you found in Austin, I’m curious as to what he will think of her!

    1. Oooooh! We went to Torchy’s, but we’ll have to check out those other places. I was super impressed with the quality/price of the food I had there!

  6. Very cute dress – by Kathie Lee, go figure! Turned out great and perfect for that weather. In all that heat you should have gone to Hippy Hollow – where clothing is optional! Lovely lake to float in and not worry about tan lines :)

  7. I am an Austinite, have been here practically my whole life and I LOVE love LOVE! the Alame Drafthouse!! We only go to another theater if friends buy us tickets or we have a coupon or something ;) I’m really glad you got to enjoy one of them but I hope next time you visit Austin you get to go to one of the special events they have where you get props to play with!! For example, when we went and saw Aliens, they gave us a cap gun for particular parts to “shoot” at the aliens on screen, and even had pyrotechnics for explosions! There’s also things like “Ladies of the 80s Sing-a-longs” and things like that if you’re interested!!

And as always, you come up with some pretty nifty re-fashions!! I’ve never even checked out our thrift stores in town, just mainly hit up a Goodwill when I have some time and sometimes get lucky with something that already fits… I might just have to check out these shops though now…..

  8. Your “before” looks like Lilo! (From Lilo and Stitch)

I am totally obsessed with this blog. Haven’t attempted any refashes of my own but I am hoping to soon! :-)

  9. Austin is fun and you are right, it’s one of the hottest places on Earth in the summer! If you like thrifting in Austin you should come visit me in Houston- we had tons of great thrift places including my favorite: Texas Junk!
