Back from Sabbatical!

Fashion History: Slaxtastic Edition
SPRING!!!!!!!!

Hey guys!  After my totally unannounced break, I’m back!  So…what’s up with my crazy long absence from ReFashionista?  I don’t know what else to say except that I’ve been doing this blog for 5 years and just wanted to take a break from being The ReFashionista and just be plain ol’ Jillian for a bit.

Another big change that happened recently is that for the first time in my life I have a creative job.  Before that, ReFashionista.net was my one escape and my outlet.  It was the place where after spending 8 hours doing really fantastically boring stuff that I got to have fun.  Now I’m happy to say my actual day job is really fun!

Also, I just got out of the routine.  This blog actually took a lot of time and energy (not a bad thing by any means), but in the moving process, I just sort of fell out of it.

Some of you may have noticed a couple of fun posts I guest wrote for Goodwill:  One on why I love to thrift, and one on how to look on trend with your thrifted finds.

But c’mon!  It’s time for a refashion! :D  I found this awesome springy $1 Muumuu and knuuknuu (harhar) it would be great for a relaxing afternoon with friends!

Oh hai!
Oh hai! Welcome to my new place!

Of course this frock wasn’t without its issues.  It had a few weird stains on it that didn’t come out in the wash (more on that later), It’s obviously too big for me, and as temps have gotten nice & warm, I wasn’t feeling the sleeveage.  But isn’t that print fabulous?  And I really liked the neckline too!

To get started, I grabbed my seam ripper and started de-sleeving.

Pick. Pick. Pick.
Pick. Pick. Pick.

Byeeee!
Byeeee!

Next, I closed up those raw edges…

Pin...
Pin…

And whirrrrrr!
And whirrrrrr!

Next, a bit of fitting was in order!  I was happy to see that those stubborn stains would no longer be an issue, as I’d be able to just sew them off.  :)

Reshaping!
Reshaping!

See? Soon they'll be a thing of the past!
See? Soon they’ll be a thing of the past!

Each side got taken in…

Just a couple more whirrrrs, folks!
Just a couple more whirrrrs, folks!

And that’s it!  My first refashion in over a month is now complete!

Yay!
Yay!

I styled my new frock with an awesome bag I thrifted for $2.00, one of my many giant pairs of shades, a necklace that used to be my grandmother’s, and my comfy Sperrys.  :)

You like?

This dress had a LOT of fun!

Just meandering downtown...like ya do.

  24. Oh Happy Happy Day! Our favorite creative/talented cutie is baaackk!!! Your Mumu redo made my day! You have inspired this 40+ yr. home-sewing senior granny to refashion 2 newer swimsuits that became 4 sizes too big! Im also thinking a too big dress will make a real cute tunic to wear with leggings..So glad you are back and smiling your pretty face lots with your friends!

  25. Welcome back! It’s funny how people who don’t blog think it is this easy-peasy thing that takes no time at all but it actually takes up a lot of time in reality! And the worst is when people stop following because you don’t blog twice a day like some blogs can, but hey jeeze, if someone is going to tart paying me to do it then yeah, obviously I will blog more often. I guess what I am trying to say is take all the time you need, we will always be here (or at least I know I will!). Glad you are enjoying your new job, great refash! Also: That bag!!!! Amazing!

  26. At first I thought seriously there is no way she’s gonna turn that muumuu into something cute but you DID! Not just cute, but super cute.

Uh and how about a tour of your new place!

  27. I was so sure you were going to give it a dye bath; glad you didn’t have to! The print reminds me of my grandma; love it with YOUR grandma’s necklace!

  28. Hey Jillian:

Welcome back & glad to hear that you like your real job.

Regarding stains in clothing, did you ever try a product call Awesome? You can find it at the Dollar Tree & it lives up to its name. Just spray it on the stain, rub it together a few times then wash & out comes the stains. Give it a try.

  29. Yay! Finding a new post with a positive update (and cute refashion!) was a very good ending to a very good day!

  30. It’s great that you are enjoying your job. It is nice to have you back. Looking forward to more refashions and I love the dress!!

Hope We will see your new place. Hope the guy which you are next is your new fella (I am a romantic girl lol)
    See you soon
    Hélène

  32. I love the way the dress fit you. I wish my stomach was that small.

If you blog once a day, or once a week, or once a month, or once a year, or never again it does not matter. You have already changed so many people’s lives. You created a link to many friends. You inspired all of us and we thank you.

The blog should be fun and not a chore. Enjoy life, you deserve it.

  33. I am so glad that you’re back! the dress refashion is super great. It looks fantastic on you. I also love the print. Great job!

  34. I admit it, I WAS worried! I think your reasoning was very good and I am just happy you are doing well. It is great to hear that the new job is fun and you found a new place to live. The gang looks great and I’m happy warm weather is back. Our family is missing Columbia a lot right now, but Prague isn’t so bad! We will be home for summer at the end of June and plan to spend lots of time on Lake Murray.
Hopefully, we will run in to you at a thrift store or out and about. HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
    Regards,
    Beth Ineson

  35. I’m really happy to see you again. Your blog has been a great source of inspiration and it has really changed my way of looking at fashion :-) and the printing of this dress is really cool!
Thank you for sharing your world.
    Bettina

  36. You are beautiful dahling! It is wonderful to see you back after a much deserved break! Keep taking care of yourself!

  37. Thank you for your wonderful website. I love the pictures step by step and your quirky comments. I stumbled onto your site through Pinterest and am now enjoying your posts for a break from my hectic job. You have a tremendous talent and am glad you aren’t afraid to put it out there, personal and professional.

  38. I am a fake sewer – I don’t know what I’m doing but fake it till I make it – Your talent just sucks me in – It is so cool to watch the process of transformation – I want to channel my inner ReFashionista and give this a try! Thanks for the Inspiration.

  39. Awesome job on the dress, very cute. I was thinking it should be turned into an extra pillowcase for unexpected guests who have to sleep on the couch…..

  40. Oh thank God you’re back. I visited your site yesterday ‘just in case’ you’d posted as I’ve missed your inspiration. The dress looks amazing,

  41. Ditto Huzzah! Except next time, can you just warn us? We’ve missed you, and been a bit worried, even though I had a feeling you were just getting your bearings :) Dress looks fab of course. As a fellow thrift re-doer and amateur sewer, I would love to hear any specific tips about fabric, refitting, even mistakes we should try to avoid; besides the design changes you make. I love the nitty gritty! Welcome back friend!!

  42. Hooray! Welcome back Jillian – it’s so nice to see you again, in yet another amazing refashion. I missed you, so great to have you back, and I’m very happy that you have a fun creative job too!

  43. That stain looks like it could have been rust. I know it is gone now but next time you just need to put a bit of lemon juice on it and put it out in the sun and it should go a way. No worries on the break If life takes you in another direction let it, it took you here and you liked this, adventures are out there to be had. Have some.

  44. Welcome back! First time I’ve actually been concerned about someone I don’t know at all :) Sounds like a lot of good changes for you… congrats!

  45. I’m so glad you’re back! I check your blog every single day to see if you’re back. You look happy! Love the refash! Very refreshing look!!!

  46. Glad to see you back and to hear your job is working out so well for you! Cute refashion and styled well – as usual :)

  47. Nice you are back! I hope you have ‘recovered’ also from the nearly past. Welcome back! I like your articles very much.
    Many greetings form Holland!

  48. Welcome back! You’ve been missed…
Cute dress, I really love it.

About a good creative job: Mine is not really creative but gives me the opportunity to do a lot of things I like – which also results in cutting back on my own projects because sometimes I feel like, well, I’ve already done some editing today, and fiddling with layouts and internet recherche…

  49. Yay! So glad to see you posting and refashioning again! I was always pouty when I looked and no new blog! Missed you!

  50. I love all of you refashions and they inspire me to refashion some of my clothing. For some reason I have a hard time with my imagination If I cant be inspired by you. Hope you get your groove back soon!

  51. Very happy to see that you’re not only back, but doing well and seem so very happy. The dress is adorable, which is something I never thought could be said about a muumuu but once again you’ve proven me wrong in the most awesome way possible.

  52. Love, love, love the dress and the yellow slax!! Just wondering though, how do you take in your clothes to fit you so perfectly? Is your dress form your actual size?
