I’ve been scouring the racks at my favorite thrift stores for a nice warm cape. Since I sometimes wear items with belled sleeves, they don’t always fit very well into my coat sleeves. A cape is a perfect solution!
Sadly, I have had absolutely no luck in finding one. But it looks like my luck has changed, thanks to Melissa over at Trevor Loves Mommy!

I bought this skirt because I loved the plaid and the soft wool fabric. This size 16 skirt had quite a few seams in it, which I usually avoid, but those seams create the flairs you see in the skirt, which was another reason I fell for the skirt. Don’t ask me why, but I immediately thought “capelet” when I spotted this skirt. This skirt only cost me $5.
I don’t know about you, but I always find scads (yes SCADS) of warm wool skirts that I don’t want. This refashion opens an entirely new world of possibilities for me, and I hope it excites you too!

You can check out Melissa’s full tutorial (complete with a link to a free cape pattern) here. Be sure to take a look at her other lovely refashions as well. :)
Cheers!
Bahaha! At first I read it as “skirt to CARPET!” Anyway, it’s gorgeous.
Link to Melissa is not working
This link is not to her site.
Thanks for the heads up! All fixed now!
Ooh, I have an old velvet(ish) skirt that would be great for this!

Thank you so much for the heads up! It’s all fixed now! :)
Sweet! That cape is classic. No one would ever guess it was once a skirt.
CUTE, CUTE, CUTE, CUTE, CUTE……………I’d copy that in a minute. Darling ! ! ! !
Totally inspiring! Thanks for the great reader’s refashion…
Love this one. You could also leave it longer and put in armholes….
fantastic
Link is working now and I’m IMPRESSED!! She did a fantastic job – reading her full post showed that there was more work involved than I first thought. Nicely done! I’ve used larger-sized skirts that have lots of fabric for other items (napkins, scarves, etc.), but may have to give this a try. Thanks for sharing this! :)
What a unique way to repurpose an item of clothing and it looks great.
Love that big skirt to cape idea! Awesome!
this is gorgeous!
Reminds me so much of Diana Rigg’s cape in The Avengers tv series. Lovely.
THIS. THIS. THIS. Simply brilliant and might be the tipping point to make me lean towards learning how to sew. Cuz I luvs me a capelet!
Cute! So very creative!
You are so clever! Love to look up your methods! My mum used to make me little tunics when a child out of my fathers serge pants! My skills have only run to dresses from patterns and lots of happy pants … Pattern cut from another pair I had!
Have bought new sewing machine! At present have only sewn straight forward things but you inspire me!
soooo classy. well done Melissa.
Lurve this! Very cool.
