Step into My Office
Happy Monday all!
I’m fortunate enough to work for a company that doesn’t usually mind too much if I want to work remotely for part of the day. This desire typically arises on unexpectedly sunny days where my porch or an outdoor table at a coffee shop seems like a far better office than the one I inhabit most of the time.
If you live in SC, you know the weather last week was all sorts of sunny and perfect.
“So, Tom…” I asked my boss (for the first two days of my work week), “It’s going to be really really nice out today. You wouldn’t have a problem with me working remotely for the last part of the day would you?”
He raised an eyebrow the first morning. The eyebrow went higher the second the morning so I added an additional plea of “I need Vitamin D, Tom. Otherwise my brain can’t create Seratonin and I’ll be miserable. You don’t want that for me, do you?”
By Wednesday (another gorgeous day), I knew I was pushing it, so I tossed a few extra items in my car before driving to work.
“So, Tom…” I began. “It’s going to be really really nice out today…”
“Jillian,” he warned, raising a hand to cut me off.
“Nononono…let me finish. Would you mind if I worked right outside of this building this afternoon?” I smiled (hopefully) convincingly.
“Let me guess. You brought a table to set up outside.”
“Yes, and other various accoutrements such to make my outdoor office as pleasant as possible.”
“Do you think you’ll have the right ambiance?”
“Yes. I even brought incense, just in case.”
“Fine, Jillian. Enjoy watching random people vomit in our dumpster.” <—-I’ve never actually seen this happen.
I understand that a lot of companies frown a little harder on working from home or remotely than mine (a mistake in my book). But have you tried asking for a (n admittedly odd) compromise like the one I went for? What would you need to create an ideal mobile office? Would a change of scenery make your work a little more pleasant and creative?
Maybe you could get a few coworkers in on it too. 🙂
Cheers!

As I write this from a very rainy Virginia city, I am envious of your sunshine and mild temperatures! Maybe I should move to SC?!
I love the tailgate desk! That’s fantastic that your job allows flexibility. Much better than having everyone staring out the window wishing they were outside on a nice day!
Is that a grill in the background??? Tailgate?
I am intrigued by the framed “award” hanging above your desk where you are in one of your signature poses.
If I do not get a job where I don’t have to be inside behind a desk all day, I may just die. Go you!
If we didn’t have walk-in customer traffic…my boss would have NO Problem with this and would probably lead the way!
I like the way you think.
where did you get that great tablecloth?
Thrifted of course! 🙂 I have several vintage tablecloths I’ve picked up along the way. 🙂
I want your boss!!!! HA!!!!
I love this. We don’t need to be stuck to one place and I can imagine it helps with creativity. I’m retired now myself, but sometimes I just like using different rooms, going to the park, the library, somewhere different. But here in Idaho while we do get some lovely sunny days, we also have massive amounts of snow, so I’ll just opt for a window view wherever I am.
Love it, but can’t imagine many companies going for it. They should! Especially for meetings. Just look at the attendance you could get.
Funnily enough, on sunny days I suddenly have field work that must be done right that minute. . . I do find myself wandering through some odd areas of town, but it’s OUTSIDE.
Love the tailgate office day. You boss needs to be applauded for allowing people to be able to work in a bit of a more relaxed enviroment from time to time. Happy workers get more done.
If more companies allowed outdoor working spaces, they would get better productivity out of their employees 🙂
Why do bosses act like you’re asking for their firstborn when you want a damn work from home day every once in a while?! I’m grating on that myself these days 🙂
I think it’s marvelous. In college, I had a professor who thought like you. On nice days, he would usher us all outside. (We knew after one time we needed more than grass to sit on!) He would conduct his lecture outside. He even brought a chair for himself. It was glorious. I would like to do that in middle school but we can’t now because of safety reasons. But I envy you!!
I love it! First semester, I let both of my senior classes have class outside on beautiful days. I have never felt so appreciated so quickly! I get similar results from relying on just the natural light from my classroom windows rather than turning on the fluorescent lights. 😉
That’s awesome! Set a trend girl Jillian, set a trend!
I love it! I used to have a job that allowed me to work from home on occasion. I got so much done on those days!!!
hahaha, nice solution!
Maybe I should ask for it… The facilities-department insisted that I could work in my office this week.. whilst workers are plastering the walls in there…. like, right under my desk.
Yep, you read that right! They expected me to do research and write articles while plasterers are crawling underneath my desk space, blasting music and making a big mess of the place in general…
Too bad it’s really cold outside in the Netherlands right now!
I LOVE this. My current boss is pretty relaxed about working from home. I do it every Sunday night so I can take off early during the week to pick up my kiddo. Sometimes I have to WFH if the kiddo is sick, because I don’t have a backup for daycare. I’m in Utah, so we have mass amounts of snow right about now. On snow days we have the ability to work remotely so we don’t have to drive in. I have taken my laptop outside on sunny summer days though, just to enjoy the sunshine. 🙂
