Send in the Clowns Vol. 2
Hi! I’m back! 🙂
I was woefully absent last week for a few reasons, including being busy, being a little under the weather, and completely botching 2 intended refashions (Yep…it happens to me too). :/ I hate hate hate when I mess up a refash, especially when it’s from being rushed and/or careless. I get frustrated, and it makes me not want to try again.
I’m going to salvage my Wannabe Wednesday flop this week (I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED!!!), but in the meantime, here’s something fun for you. 🙂
Wait…did you miss that? Here it is again.
You are looking at a very strange handmade jumpsuit. That’s right. Someone went to the fabric store, chose the most terrifying thing they could find, then made something truly frightening from it.
I mean…seriously.
Long-time readers of my blog know I’ve dealt with a clown suit refashion in the past, but could I handle this one? Yikes…even I wasn’t sure, especially with two recent failures under my belt. :/
But I had to try!
First off, I needed to hide those awful clowns as much as I possibly could. I tossed the jumpsuit into a bath of dark navy dye.
I left it in its bath for about 40 minutes or so.
The dye job was a HUGE help in de-creepifying this one. 🙂
Unfortunately, it was still a jumpsuit, and a jumpsuit that gave me a worse case of camel toe than the Prancercise Lady‘s. :/ Not to worry! I unpicked the inner leg seams, right up through the crotchal region.
I put my soon-to-be dress on my dress form, and pinned those legs together to make a skirt.
Then, I stitched my new front and back seams down.
I cut off that extra fabric, then turned my dress right-side out. I cut off some of that length (which thankfully removed a couple of those scary clowns).
I gave the bottom of my new dress a new hem, and was all done!
I think this garment is much less scary now, don’t you?
It was a tad chilly out, so I added on a simple black cardigan.
I rocked my new frock at the World Beer Festival with friends!
After tasting many many beers, I had to head off to a super-secret X-Marks the Spot dinner event! The location and theme were completely unknown until I showed up at the designated meet-up point to get my map.
Imagine how surprised I was to be dining in Hades!
I initially felt pretty awful for poor Persephone…:/
…but was eventually distracted from my concerns. 😉
Such a perfect day! 🙂
Cheers!

Day 296: Forest Fairy Dress
I’m quite happy with today’s refashion, you guys! 🙂 I started with this $1 3x long sleeve tee from Goodwill.
I chose this big tee for a couple of reasons. First off, it’s made of really high-quality thick cotton jersey, which isn’t always easy to find. I also knew I’d want to make it into a dress, and the only shirts I can really do this with have to be 2x or greater, otherwise they won’t be long enough.
The first thing I needed to do was get this shirt in shape. 🙂 I put it on my dress form right-side-out and pinned the sides.
Then, I sewed the sides up, except for the sleeves!
Then, I did some cutting!
I cut two small holes right next to the seams on my waist.
I cut the sleeves off the two side strips, and stitched my two strips together.
I reached into my dye stash, and pulled out this guy:
Now, as some of you might remember, the washing machine in my new digs doesn’t get hot water for some reason. :/ As I want a nice, dark, saturated hue for my new dress, cold water just wasn’t an option. I was also running late to meet a friend from out of town, and really needed to do all of my girly getting ready stuff. This meant I really didn’t have time to sit and stir a pot of dye for an hour. :/
So, I did what any lazy girl would do, I just wadded up the dress and plopped it into a dye bath on my stove, and left it there for an hour. I knew the dye wouldn’t set evenly…but I was optimistic. I figured an uneven dye job could end up looking pretty cool. 🙂
After the hour was up, I rinsed it in my machine.
After it was all rinsed out, I dried it, and tossed it on just in time to head out to meet an old college pal from my theatre days! 🙂
I realllllly like this one! I like my side fin things, how the sash works, and the uneven green color!
My hip new dress was perfect for a day spent at the very hip Indie Grits Film Festival!
But first…I needed to taste a bit of wine at Cellar on Greene. 😉
Then, Gary and I checked out a few short films at the new Nickelodeon Theater…
One of which was in 3-D!
We even got to vote on which films we liked best!
This was such a fun and busy day! We went around checking out the studios a few local artists, and even saw a puppet slam that night!!! Sadly, I couldn’t take any pics (flash photography is a major no-no!), but the show was completely amazeballs!
I love days like this where there are tons of awesome & unique cultural events going on in my little city. It really makes me proud to live here in Columbia, SC. 🙂
Cheers!

Day 207: Kelly Dress
When Fella saw today’s piece, he literally lol’d, saying it looked like a bathing suit from 1910!
After doing a little research, I’m inclined to agree!
Not only is this thing way too big, and a jumper, and kind of dingy, there were also a couple of problems lurking on the back of it.
Somebody got a little over-excited about ripping out that tag!
So yeah…it doesn’t have a lot going for it…yet.
First, I decided to take care of the dinginess problem. I grabbed a box of dye…
…and added half of it little by little as I added the fabric into an old pitcher…
…until the whole thing was inside!
I boiled some water in my tea kettle, and poured it over the jumper/dye mixture and let it sit for an hour. I really like low-maintenance dyeing techniques, and this is one of my faves! It gives your piece a funky sort of tie dye look!
After the hour was up, I tossed the jumper into my washing machine for a quick rinse.
Yay! That color is looking fun & funky! 🙂 Now let’s take on those goofy lookin’ legs!
Before I started taking this piece in, I snipped out the crotch, cutting right along the seam.
I took this piece in from the back instead of the sides…mainly because I didn’t want to lose those side pockets. Hello. I’m Jillian. And I’m a pocket addict. Also, this took care of those holes at the neckline (Two Birds…One Stone!). I ended up taking it in about 6″.
I’m almost done! 🙂 I tossed my dress-to-be on my dress form inside-out and pinned down the middle. Time to finish up making those legs into a skirt!
I cut off the excess material, and was ready to toss on my fun & comfy new dress! Well…almost. It just needed one more tweak.
Now we’re ready! I wore my pretty new dress to work, where I was subjected to the dreariest and foggiest day imaginable! :/
A lot of people ask how I unwind from the stress of keeping up with my admittedly really hectic schedule. Here’s one way…
Here’s another…
And another…
But here’s the best way!
Now for the After pics!
Cheers!
