Wannabe Wednesday: “Noten” Wrong With a No-Sew Maxi Skirt
A lot of you have been asking me to diversify my refashions by
A. Not just refashing dresses all the time and
B. Doing a few longer/more modest refashes that would work for any body type (Personally, I think that if you like something you should just wear it as you probably look more awesome in it than you’re giving yourself credit for, but I digress).
Well, it’s your lucky day!
I needed something casual to wear for a cookout/movie night with some fabulously fun people. I chose this!
See? I’m fully-covered and ready to go! 🙂
Just kidding, folks! 😉
I was inspired by this skirt by Dries Van Noten:
I unbuttoned my dress just enough to make it fit around my hips, then tied the sleeves around my waist, tucking the collar in as I did so.
Here’s my version!
Here’s the designer version again:
And here’s mine:
Try as I might, I couldn’t find a price for the original skirt, so I can’t calculate my savings on this one. 🙁 BUT…I’m pretty sure it cost more than the $1 I spent on my version!
The weather was perfect, and I was happy for my full-coverage skirt as the mosquitoes are baaaaaa-aaaaack! :/
The food was delish!
The wine was even better!
This is one gentleman’s (not sure if he’d want me announcing his name AND the the fact that he’s going to be out of town on here) last supper here in Columbia for a few months, so we decided to commemorate the occasion appropriately! 🙂
Cheers!
Original Cost: No idea. :/
Copycat Cost: $1
Savings: Not a clue, but probably a good bit!

Awesome and simple. Love it!
Love your stuff but am really loving the recreation of the last supper lol x
Agree with Samantha. I am not always a fan of the refashions where the sleeves are simply re-tied, but this one looks really great! Plus, those of us with a little more junk in the trunk could wear this one too!
I totally agree with Melinda. Loving this one!
I love you last supper photo!! Very fun.
Love this refashion!!! I was interested in the cost of the original…couldn’t find it 🙁 but if it is a skirt (per cost of other skirts by this designer) it’s between $500-$1,000+ GASP!!! If it is a dress then it’s $800++ GULP!!! So I’d say you saved a penny or million 😀 BTW I love your friends table clothes! Are they actually clothes or fabric? And the flowers where very pretty!
Sorry I can’t spell!!! Cloths not clothes…DUH me 😛
Thanks for doing another no-sew refashion! It’s hard for us gals without a sewing machine. Love your blog… who is that guy?? You look super happy 🙂
Sooo… you addressed questions regarding longer refashions and ones that AREN’T dresses… with a no-sew refashion that is a skirt (i.e. half of a dress). Interesting choice. I know it’s your blog and everything, but if you’re going to ask for questions and address reader desires, my guess is you should do just that.
PS: no I didn’t submit those questions.
Ahh I see, longer as in length, not longer as in time. Sorry for that one! Though, I’m still curious about the dress/skirt thing.
Wow! Yours is even better than the original one! Looks amazing.
I’m so thrilled you a.) did a no-sew refashion b.) put it up while I was at lunch so I could read it and c.) did a totally awesome photo for me to enjoy:) Fun!
Last Supper refash — awesome!
Hilarious! I think this is my favorite post AND refashion. Now, for the skirt…did you have to keep adjusting & re-adjusting it all night? That’s what I would be concerned about. As far as looks go, I liked yours much better than hers and those yellow shoes are super cool.I LOVE a maxi skirt.
I had one circle skirt that I tried to make into super wide leg pants but I failed and ruined my skirt argh! I sewed the center line up too high and even then the crotch looked a little puckered. Please one day will you refashion a full maxi skirt into a pair of palazzo pants??
The skirt actually stayed in place fine. I double-knotted it just to be sure! 🙂
Ooooh! A palazzo pants refashion sounds fun! I’ll keep my eyes peeled for a full maxi skirt! 🙂
Thanks and “yay”!
Sounds like a plan! I have this long maxi dress that I think looks awful on me! The bottom 5″ are ruffled and I don’t do ruffles. If I could make it into like a goucho pant or something, that would be cool!

Love it! Seen a few shirt refashions but none as easy as this!

I love the skirt and the Last Supper photo – genius! I love how you always show yourself wearing your refashions in your life (and not just in your bedroom/ house). You’re inspiring me to chop up more hideous charity shop finds!
LOVE the refashion! LOL….LOVED the last supper photo!!! You have such FUN friends!!!!
Um yeah, that model is mad. Clearly she’s hungry. She needs a bite of that burger!
Ughh can we please stop telling people to eat more/less?
I think she’s really mad because she forgot to wear a bra 😉
the Last Supper photo was the best yet!!
Holy refash! I love it. I like yours more than the designer one.
I love to read of your creativity. And I also l love how it appears you live and love your friends to the fullest extend. Keep up the excellent blog!
LOL, YOUR FRIENDS AND YOU ALWAYS SEEM SO FUNNY AND HAVING A BLAST!!!!!!!!!!! Love the “last” supper pic!
Love this refash!!!! It turned out great and looks more complicated than it really is.
Love you! Think your blog is aces! 70 year old advanced style wannabe.
The recreation of The Last Supper is AWESOME! You should frame it and hang in your dining room! 🙂
Epic last supper photo! And yes… I would like to know about the boy… and the skirt is super cute!
Love, love, love the last supper pic! So inventive and a great way to remember someone’s last supper with you! The rehash as interesting too.
You are so incredible and talented not only with the sewing machine but how to connect with people and inspire them! Blessings to you!!
Well said, Traci!
Your version was WAAAAAY better than your inspiration!!! Good job!
To cute for words. I just love your creativity and sharing. Keep it up!
I think yours looked better than the designer one! I didn’t like the designer one much but loved yours. Been reading your blog for a while now, first time commenting. I think you are amazing and such an inspiration. Keep up the good work.
Btw, awesome last supper recreation.
Super cute! I love the Last Supper interpretation too 🙂

I have a problem. I like my shirts to fit around my top but they r always short. Can you show how to turn a big t shirt into tanktop that fits nice & long.
Sure thing! 🙂
Another amazing transformation! Great job!
The skirt is awesome (and I like it more than the designer version) but the Last Supper picture is HYSTERICAL!
Hi refashionista! Love this one. What material was your refashion made of? Thanks!
Hi back! 🙂 Thanks! Mine is made of polyester. 🙂
Thank you!
I like yours much more than the inspiration!!
You truely inspire me!!
Funny last supper shot! Very quirky!!
I love your comment that people should just wear what they like, I totally agree. What a neat re-fashion, never would have thought to just tie the sleeves. Love the recreation of the last supper too, very fun!
When I started reading this post, I thought ‘Oh, I’m not liking this one…’ but then I saw the picture and it’s cute!! Great job, love this one 🙂
omgosh, I love love LOVE your take on the last supper! What a clever idea, just like all your re-fashes!
(I think the model is mad on account of her wicked see-thru top!)
Love this. Your version definitely looks better than the Designer version. The Last Supper pic is AWESOME. You have a great group of friends there. Love reading your blog.
Love it! Very cute! And haha, the last supper picture is amazing!! 🙂
You never cease to amaze me….love the look… Are u always this bubbly? I now have my mom hooked on your site, she is loving it also. It is good to see friends out enjoying them selves….seems we don’t do it enough….keep sewing.or knotting…lol
Love it! I need to make this! (And I’m actually going to try!)
The Last Supper was the best, lol.
Hey girl – I totally get what the other folks were saying, only because I have BIG boobs and there’s no way I can go without a bra, even though my hubby would prefer it! 🙂 And you are all lean and slim and all, which makes everything you put on look fabulous! Your version of this is so much better than the original! Great work and LOVE the Last Supper photo!
That is awesome!
Yours turned out so much better than the designer one– love it! And so simple… As a side note, not everyone who asks for more modest clothes has body-confidence issues; some people have religious reasons for wearing fuller-coverage stuff. One suggestion that I’ve seen for girls who don’t wear short skirts is to get a longer slip that has ruffles or lace layers at the bottom that extend beyond the hem of the skirt.
Good point! I completely forgot about that!
New fella?? Hehe!
“Personally, I think that if you like something you should just wear it as you probably look more awesome in it than you’re giving yourself credit for, but I digress.”
Yes! This so much. Love the re-fash: it looks much less chilly than the original 🙂
Cool refashion–but the last supper pic is just too great! You had me laughing so hard, what a fun bunch!
Thank you for not wearing a see-through shirt without the necessary pasties. Faux pas much? I love your version better, too! You’re very talented! Looking forward to something like maybe a vintage sheet into a long skirt?
Oh my gosh I love this wanna be Wednesday skirt!!! I thrift a lot and see a lot of men’s shirts I could this with!!! Thanks for the ideas!!! 🙂
LOVE the last supper! Have you seen the version with ‘Jesus’ from the Big Lebrowski?
I found you blog via sozo. Looking forward to more inspiration thank you 🙂

Okay Jillian, I’ve been following your blog for over a year now but this is the first time I’m posting and I’m doing it just to say….I LOVE your blog AND your refashions! This one was especially hysterical with the last supper photo and the skirt was great! I wish I could pick out $1 fashions the way you do with an eye for what they will become, but I look forward to seeing more great stuff and then I will hopefully find a way to do my own. 🙂
hehehe…lurker! 🙂 Thanks! 🙂
I love the last supper recreation! And, the skirt is awesome. Have you ever done a post about how much time you do thrifting? I would love to know more about how often you go out. You always find the best stuff.
That’s a good question. I’ll have to mull it over, as I really haven’t thought about it…:)
HAHAHA love the last supper photo! And I really like the skirt! Whatever you do, whether it is a dress, or not, I love it!
Love it! Yours is cuter than the designer one!!
Oh godess of dress refashions 😉 – a plea:
I would be ever so grateful if you would help me build an awesome resource for dress refashions by sharing your favourite dress refashion tutorials here and some of your favourite dress refashions here on the Refashion Co-op!
xx Eddie
Eddie’s Room on Facebook come over for some crafty ideas and conversation. 🙂
Oooooooh! I shall certainly give it a go! 🙂
I usually don’t like the look of shirt-to-skirt with tied sleeves because it still looks like a shirt. That said…I like what you did with your copycat. Yours looks more like a skirt with a pretty waistline. It looks like the trick to make the style look more “skirty” and not “shirty” is the shirt style.
From what I’ve seen in the comments, it looks like there are requests to convert skirts to trousers. I can’t wait to see you tackle that one! 🙂
I like your version more than the pricey designer one. That grey color is lovely and it drapes really nicely. Nice job!
The rafashion was awesome, but the last supper totally made me crack up! Awesome job!
love it! I feel so inspired to look at my out dated closet and repose before tossing in the thrift store bag.
last supper…giggle. well done. So creative. but then of course it is. You are a creative rock star. Love everything you do. This skirt is terrific. xo
i think what you do is awesome!!! And i cant wait to go to the thrift shop to see what i can do to the clothes i get. I am young and i want to be a fashion designer and i have heard this is a great way to start and get your creative juices flowing!!!
I love the skirt, & The Last Supper recreation! You do such creative & awesome refashions, Jillian, & I think a big reason they look so good on you is that (in addition to the fact that you are so adorable) you wear them with such confidence & flair! Thanks for inspiring us all to let our creativity loose!
Wow! I just found your blog and I’m totally blown away. I’ve always loved thrift shopping but will def look at clothes differently now. Thanks for the post about the goodwill clearance center too, just hit one up this wk. can’t wait to start refashioning!
I love your blog and have become an avid reader since I discovered it a month or so ago. I read this article on NPR and thought of your rants on textile waste. Your blog and articles like this always make me re-think the way I obtain my clothing as an “environmentalist.”

Keep rockin’ the re-fashions!
I just found your blog and love it. I can’t help but wonder what your closet looks like. Have you ever posted a picture of it?
Eeeek! Goodness no! It’s a mess right now. But I DO have all my dresses in alphabetical order by color. 🙂 When I get it cleaned out, I’ll take a nice pic for ya!
Jillian, you have inspired me to re-learn to sew and attempt my own refashions! In fact, I sewed the graduation dress I am wearing in my pic! So THANKS for the inspiration. I really like not being limited to other people’s ideas of fashion.
Who’d have thought a shirt (or in this case a ginormous dress) would make such a cute skirt?! Love it! And I have to say, you have to some pretty fun friends.
Last Supper re-enactment: B+!! {You only get an “A” if you have all of the characters. *ha ha*} 😉
I must say, that original dress was probably THE most BORING item i have yet seen on your blog! I mean, WOW that thing is DULL!!!! …The refashed skirt, however, is terrific!! Black top & vivid yellow shoes set it off perfectly!! 😎
I looked at price for this designer skirts and they are about 200 minimum so your savings were at least $199.00
