Hoppy to See You Top
Hey! Â Do you remember that time I refashioned this muumuu…
…into this no-sew dress?
If you don’t remember, it’s okay. Â You can revisit it right here. Â Although it was just last week, so you really should have a slightly better memory. Â 😉
So…now what? Â I told you I planned on a re-refashion of this one, and now you get to see it!
To get started, I picked off those sleeves with my seam ripper.
I couldn’t very well leave those raw edges as-is, so I pinned them under, then stitched ‘em up!
I knew I needed to resize this one, so on my dress form it went!
And THIS is when I did something stupid. Â I pinned one side and guesstimated that the same amount would come off the other side by just gathering and holding the fabric, rather than pinning the opposite side as well. Â My reason for this was that I didn’t want to have to take the time to unpin the opposite side to get the dress off my form and then repin it again. Â Lazy. Lazy. Lazy!
I pinned both sides, assuming my dumb guesstimation was correct.
Then, I stitched up both sides like a total moron. :/
After cutting off the excess material, I tried my dress on. Â And it wouldn’t even fit over my hips! Â And all because I didn’t measure properly. Â 🙁 Â Lesson learned!
Undaunted, I decided to just make this dress a top instead!
I added a hem to that bottom edge…
After a quick press, I was all done! Â 🙂
My mistake ended up working in my favor, as I ended up spending my day at a friend’s hop farm in the middle of nowhere!
Before this trip, I had no idea how hops actually grew…BEHOLD! Â 🙂
I even helped out by picking a few!
Of course, I wasn’t alone in my hop harvesting adventure! Â 🙂
So…what did we DO with all of those hops?
Why…we made beer! Â 😀
As the sky darkened, it was time to head home…
So far I’ve managed to get two refashions out of this $1 muumuu! Â I wonder what I can make with that bottom scrap? Â 🙂
Cheers!
P.S. Â Don’t forget to enter my Pay it Forward Sewing Machine Giveaway! Â Next Monday is coming up faster than you think!

Great top and a fun day. I hate guesstimates- I have had way too many errors doing that- I always think I am smaller than I am….duh. Hope the beer was good! xo Diana
Thanks! I don’t know WHY it didn’t look as obviously too-small as it was while I was working on it! Ugh!
Lovely Lady Hops! You crack me up. Great Refash!
This is exactly why I want to start my refashioning adventure with thrift store finds instead of items I paid full price for. Then I can mess up as much as I want without worry! Your top still looks lovely. 🙂
Insane! We are about to embark on a hops harvesting adventure tomorrow! Your post made me even MORE excited!
It’s so much fun! I hope the hop farm you’re visiting is just as lovely as the one I was lucky enough to spend time on! 🙂
Love how that turned out. I’d say the measuring mix up was definitely a happy accident. And that farm looks GORGEOUS. Jealous over here.

I like the tank top, I would make it longer, but you have a perfectly small frame for a shirt like that! I can’t wait to see if I might win the sewing machine! I am following you and sharing the giveaway, so I really hope I can get it!! Again love the top!
Hehe. If I could have made it longer, I would have. My hips just weren’t as narrow as I apparently thought! 🙂
That is precisely what I had in mind when you asked us for our thoughts after the no sew part of the refash! I love it!
Your hairdo is gorgeous, just as the top!
greetings from Paris
Thank you! It’s much cooler for summer! Ah! So jealous of your location right now! 🙂
Love it!!!
Your refashions are an inspiration!
Thank you! I clicked on your link, and your blog doesn’t have anything on it yet. C’mon. Share something! 🙂
Great rework of an oops work! Looks like you had a great day out in the hops field …that could have been because of the beer …or the company … or both ;c)
Just a quick thought … you might want to take out the side seams of the too tight skirt and add panels from the material left over from the cutdown sides to make a cute little flippy A-line skirt. You could even add triangles from the salvaged sleeve material to make the hem even more flippy and full. Pair it with the matching top and …well, maybe a leather belt to keep it being totally girly-girl …or go with ribbon, and be totally girly-girl. (Hey, why not ;c) If you tossed a super light shrug on top of it … you could even wear it to work.
With such light material, it would be nice and cool and perfect for dancin’ …of course that would mean that your friendly corset lacer and photo lurker would have to take you out and twirl you around the dance floor.
2 shirts. 1 Muumuu.
Both gorgeous – and it looks like a wonderful day you had too 🙂
Thanks! Any Hop recipes you’d recommend? 🙂
Ooh – will have a think and let you know. Love a challenge!
I guess it just wanted to be a top. Cute haircut btw….I never did see the results of the haircut post!
I get lazy sometimes too, so I can understand 🙂 Now you know that next time you should always take the time to measure & pin :p Oh and: I think the top turned out really nice!
Good job with the improvision in making the top!
And now, take the bottom of the dress, add a zipper, use those sleeves you took off to make a waistband (or maybe use them to make a lining for the waistline) and there you have it – a new skirt!!
so much cuter as a top!
I love that neckline!
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve “trusted” my guesstimations and have been so off that I just scrapped the whole project.
I just finished a refashion this morning also and I love looking at others for inspiration.
Seems like a happy accident! Cute top.
Wow it’s soo cute on you!
I made a similar guesstimate on one of my refashions and it ended up in the bin! Needless to say ill have to try harder next time!

love your new hair do.
I love this one! And I love your hair too!
It’s strangely encouraging to see that not everything you refashion turns out perfect. It will make me more forgiving of myself the next time I have a problem.
I really like how that neckline turned out.
you should make an infinity scarf with the bottom part if it’s wide enough!
The top looks really cute and your hair is gorgeous! The bangs really suit you.
I love seeing all your transformations! You are so talented! Take care and keep it up!

Threadbanger made a tube top from a tshirt a little bit ago that I think could work for your scrap, you should check it out, then you’ll have 2 tops!!! =)
great job http://differentcands.blogspot.kr/
A nice mistake, I think it makes a great tank. As for the extra piece–how about a coordinating bag???
Where was this amazing hop farm?
“oh deer” haha made my day.
In Germany those hops farms are all over the countryside. It really is quite a sight to see. Cute top. Perhaps some sort of infinity scarf might be in the works using the leftovers?
I love seeing what you do… so inspirational! And I’m in LOVE with these sandals!
I love the top, and love, love, love your blog!
I would also love to see what you do with the bottom piece. As someone who is, ahem, closer in size to the national average, my problem usually is not that a piece is too large, but too small. I’d love some ideas for taking a smaller piece and refashioning it to fit a larger body. Thanks!
Hey I love your blog! You have rekindled the romance between me and my sewing machine. I wanted to give you a tip I recently figured out. if you want to sew from scratch look through the bed sheets at the thrift shops, top or flat sheets are usually in great condition and are a steal at $1-$4 depending on size and if its a half off day. I found a blue and white gingham twin sheet for $1 this week. I plan on making a Dorothy costume with it.
I love your talent….what inspiration……onto the thrift store
You are so inspiring! I am only just now re-learning how to sew, and your step by step photos are very helpful! Thanks!
