Dreaming of a White (Elephant) Christmas!

One of my favorite things about the holiday season is the White Elephant Christmas party my friends throw every year!  As you all know by now, I love a good party, and adding a silly surprise element only makes it better!

Speaking of silly surprises, check out this heavily beshoulderpadded top I found for $1 (just assume I only spend $1 on any of my pre fashions, okay?) at a fave thrift shop!

Blousey, no?

Blousey, no?

I like that pleating on the front of this top, and that blue hue is lovely, but the rest?  Meh!

I started chopping away!

Begone pads!

My new top was missing a button, but I wasn’t too worried about that.  I wouldn’t be needing any of them pretty soon.

I'll just save you guys for later!

Whew!  All that chopping is fun, but it left me with a bunch of tacky raw edges to take care of!

Next, I took in each side by about 2″.

I cut off my excess material, and now I have a fabulous vest/tunic hybrid thing that I can wear over a dress or over a top and pants!

I opted for a dress and tights!

I accessorized with a funky pin, a skinny belt, and a pair of brogues!

Of course my pal’s daughter, Ava makes the perfect accessory!

1 Frumpy Dress = 1 Funky Sweater + 1 Fab Miniskirt!

Hey guys (but probably mostly gals)!  Remember this frumpy sweater dress?

Remember me?

Remember me?

Come on!  This wasn’t that long ago!  Okay…just check out the original refashion.  It’s alright.  I’ll wait.

I wasn’t lying when I said I had plans for that bottom leftover scrap!

You see, there is a master plan for you!

You see, there is a master plan for you!

This is a pretty simple one, folks.  This scrap obviously wants to be a cute skirt.  As I don’t have many skirts, this is what I want for it too.

I started pinning that top edge down, creating a casing.

Pinnery!

Pinnery!

Then, I stitched it down, making sure to leave enough space to thread some elastic through.

Dude...clean your sewing table. :/

Dude…clean your sewing table. :/

I grabbed a scrap of elastic salvaged from an old fitted bed sheet (every scrap is sacred!) and threaded it through.

In ya go!

In ya go!

Then, I stitched it together.

mini-whirrrrr!

And that’s all it took to turn this into a totally no-waste refashion!  Huzzah!

I paired my new skirt with my favorite tee (ethically made) and a refashed cardi.

It's alight. :)

I’ve been a bit down lately, so I thought channeling Julia Child was worth a go!

I’ve been making a lot of recipes from her masterpiece, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, realizing I’m not hungry, and then freezing my creations or giving them away.  At least I’m keeping busy.

Black (And Yellow) Friday Dress

Happy Day After Thanksgiving!  :)  I’m hoping you’ve all recovered sufficiently from your tryptophan hangovers and you’re avoided the Black Friday masses!

After my original Thanksgiving plans were dashed, I was extremely thankful to be invited to a fun feast with friends!  :)  I knew just what I wanted to wear!

I'm having such good luck with prints lately!

You’re looking a strange jacket-type thing I found for $1 at one of my fave thrift joints.

Not quite a dress...Not quite a jacket.

Not quite a dress…Not quite a jacket.

The print is great, but I really don’t need a totally functionless garment.  :/

I decided to do what I needed to do to turn this weird jackety thing into a dress!

First, I needed to stitch down that open gapey party under the buttons

Pin it down!

Then, I got to work on closing up those sides.

Pin & Stitch these guys as well!

With all those gapes closed up, all I needed to do was shorten this frock.  :)

Erica’s Maternity Reader ReFash!

Today’s Reader ReFash comes from a land down unda!  :)  I love how I’ve met so many cool Aussies through the blogosphere, and I hate to play favorites…but Erica is one of my favorites.  :)

She’s the clever lady behind Recycled Fashion, where she shows you have to be eco-fabulous in all of your fashion endeavors.  :)

Recycled Fashion Newspaper pinkjpg

Maternity clothes are expensive…and not always that attractive.  Not to worry!  Erica knows how to work a thrifted frock into a totally non-matronly maternity marvel!

Finding a secondhand garment that actually fits during late stage of pregnancy is quite remarkable, and in this instance, finding a forgiving stretchy jersey dress happened to be a real treat.

This navy dress is not officially a maternity garment, it is a ‘Myer Direct’ 70’s/80’s jersey frock. Bonus when the label reads ‘Made in Australia’; you know you’re onto an original rather than modern day ‘vintage‘ copy, being that hardly any retail clothing brands are actually made in the country anymore.

Behold!!!

JerseyDress-1

I don’t just love the refashion, I also love how she’s accessorized the outfit with that fun flower, nice boots, and a cute beret!

Cute!

Cute!

You can read her full tutorial right here.

Erica just recently gave birth to her adorable little fella, so why don’t you wish her a hearty congrats as well?  :)

Cheers!

A Funky Fall Frock!

Wow.  You guys are the most supportive & sweet friends a lucky-at-refashioning, but unlucky-in-love blogger could ask for!  Thanks for all of your wonderful words of support.  They really do help.  :)

I want to give another round of thanks to everyone who voted for me in the Dancing With the Stars Fundraiser for the American Lung Association in SC’s Oxygen Ball!  I somehow managed to dance the Viennese Waltz without falling or mangling myself in any way!  :)  I’m still waiting on the photos and video from the event, but as soon as I get it, I’ll be sharing it with you (Anticipation is exciting.).  I didn’t win the contest, but from all the votes you guys sent in, I feel like a winner.  Plus, you’ve helped everyone here in South Carolina breathe a little easier!  :)

While I can’t show you my refashioned ball gown (yet), I can show you this!

WOWZA.

WOWZA.

This dress wants to be awesome, and it’s almost there!  That print is awesome, and it actually fits me okay, but the skirt part is really too long to be fun, the neckline is stifling, and I wasn’t feeling the sleeve length either.

Chopping ensued!

Chops!

Chops!

Then, I cut a straight line down that too-high neckline and pinned it down.

See where I'm going here?

See where I’m going here?

I stitched down each side of my new V…

Whirrrrr!

Whirrrrr!

This still left the bottom point of the V a sad and vulnerable raw edge.  No worries!  First, I folded the two sides of the V together, like so:

Mkay...

Then, I stitched it down!

Just a quick lil stitch!

Now we’re getting somewhere!  I pinned those sleeves under…

…Then gave them new hems!

I took that bottom scrap and cut off the extra fabric above the hem to make an easy sash!

I’ve gotta tell you, I got TONS of compliments while wearing this dress!
