  2. Hi Jillian. Just want to say I’ve been looking at your refashions for quite a while. You are totally adorable. I’ve been trying to follow your lead refashioning my thrift finds. I can only hope practice makes perfect. I did a few and can honestly say…what the neck is this! Needless to say my dog babies have new clothes. I will keep trying. Hugs to you ladybug.

  4. Jillian you are an inspiration to so many. You have set in motion a great way for people to upcycle clothing and help out our local 2nd hand shops. I grew up wearing 2nd hand clothes and share your philosophy on the fashion industry. Keep up the great posts and pics Lady J. 🙂

  5. I love linen but it’s now $40 a yard at the fabric store! For the past few years I have been buying linen anything at the thrift store, taking the garment apart and adding all that lovely fabric to my stash. I just bought a dress form and am now going to piece back all that linen into summer tops by coming fabrics and solids. I’m looking forward to getting creative with it all!

  6. Hi Jillian, you are an amazing designer. I love to sew also. I always hated to see such beautiful fabric on out dated clothes. What a wonderful way to upcycle great fabric into new chic outfits. keep up the posts. love you here in BC Canada.

  7. I do almost all of my clothes shopping at second hand stores, but only look at things in my size and style. Looking at what you have done has given me the inspiration to branch out, and look at clothes in a whole new way. Time to dust off the ole sewing machine! Thank you!

  8. I discovered your post today on Pinterest and love it. Once or twice a year my daughter, who is a drama teacher, has to put on a school play or musical. From her racks of old, op-shop or donated items she shows me what she wants done and what she wants altered to suit that particular occasion as she works with a very limited school budget in country Australia. We have done some amazing clothing and prop transformations, thanks to her creativity. I can do the sewing but am not too good at imagining what something will look like without her help. Thanks to your blog and inspiration, I am going to try and branch out for myself (my pair of swimmers/bathers I tried to alter by removing the stiff wire bra section ended up in the bin unfortunately). I will leave the bra part of my new togs alone for next swimming season but try and make them a bit more exciting. Greetings from Adelaide, South Australia.

  13. Hi Jillian, I recently started following your blog and I love it. I have gone to the very beginning and noticed the improvement in your refashions over the years. I have started making my own refashions and hope to share at least one in the future. Do you also make recommendations based on before pictures on the best way to refashion a particular dress?

  14. Hi Jillian, I have been through all your blogs from the beginning and think the ideas are great, I have started refashioning things and will send you one of my refashions soon. My electric machine broke recently so I am using a really dear old lady, a Singer black and gold hand-cranked machine and I have lots of respect for her cos she has quite possibly been sewing for the best part of a hundred years, God bless her.
I loved your video, it was good to hear your voice and keep up the refashions cos they are very inspiring, take care and God bless love Lynn x

  15. Hi!! You’re awesome! While being snowed in today, I came across your blog and have been pretty much sitting on my couch in my PJs all day drooling over your posts and getting more and more pumped to make some of my own!! (As soon as the snow melts and I can get anywhere, that is!) So, I had a quick question! Do you wear the things you make more than once – like do you just kind of have an ever expanding closet of awesome, or do you get rid of/rethrift them after a wear or two?

Take care and keep up the awesome!

    • Thanks! I DO wear them more than once. 🙂 But when I’m done, I re-thrift so they can go off and be fabulous for someone else. 🙂

I already checked so many posts, I love your works, and you are giving me inspiration to do something similar, starting from my own closet where there are lots of things I don’t wear for some reason. I have a Janome (it was a birthday gift from my friends <3 ) who needs to whirrrrrr!!
    I really admire you!
I'll send you some pics if I'll do something pretty.

    A big big hug!

  17. Hi Jillian,
I have recently come across your site and love it so much. I do some dress sewing myself and love a good bargain. Unfortunately, here in Queensland, Aust. our thrift shops over here are rather expensive especially because I only live 15 mins from the city, but I still keep my eye out. Thanks for your Blog, love it. Keep up the good work.

  27. I love your site. I “run” a one man (me) operation for charity called an Apron Strings project . I buy old clothes from Good Will and redesign them into aprons which I then sell. The full purchase price is donated to different charitable projects. I have donated aprons to Honor Flight to raise money so that war vets can travel for free to DC to see the monuments erected for the wars they fought in. Last Christmas I earned $400 for The Global Orphan Project so they could purchase school uniforms for the children in Haiti. This summer I am on my way to earning another $400 or so for a Dental mission trip to Zambia so children in an orphanage there can receive dental care. I grew up sewing with my mom and I love the creative task of turning something old into something new. Plus, finding that perfect shirt or skirt with the great detailing or unique fabric is such a thrill.

  31. Do you ever get dirty looks when you go to regular stores to study items and go home to make them?

One day, back in high school, my mother and I wandered around Saks Fifth Avenue at Oakbrook Center in Oakbrook, IL. She pulled garments off the racks and studied them closely. She turned them inside out, carefully examining every seam and every stitch. One astute sales woman approached us and threw us out! I felt so badass for being thrown out of a Saks! My mom was DIY punk before that concept ever was mainstream.

  40. Hi Jillian,
As a professional fashion designer, I too struggle with the same things you do. I am tired of labels, unethical practices, “disposable” clothing and corporate greed. I have just started a 30 day challenge where I do not buy anything new and make new outfits from what I already have in my closet. When my 30 days are over, I think I am going to pull out my sewing machine and see what happens! Thank you for doing what you do.

  52. it took me three days to read your blog. I went through and looked at every single post. You have changed the way I look at charity shop finds ( wish they called them thrift stores in the uk!) there’s one next to my kids school, you can find me in there almost every day killing the time before pick up. most of my clothes are pre loved but I like the idea of refashioning those too big items and ones that seem to be hideous but can be remolded into something amazing! I’m not a sewer but have a machine, it usually comes out for costumes for the kids and maybe a bit of repairing. I’m not a pinner, i usually just go for broke and hope it comes out right – i have no patients! Today I found a fab retro green print jersey dress and a green wool sweater vest ( vest is too small so hoping I can make it into a shrug or waistcoat to go with the dress, the colours match beautifully) Thank you for inspiring me not to look past the clearance rack and the way too big items, I will be following your blog closely for tips and tricks xxxxx

What I’m truly curious about though is your dress form. What brand/style is it? I’ve even been inspired to do a little myself! I have 5 or 6 suits from my grandmother that are no doubt at least from the seventies. They wouldn’t be too horrible if it weren’t for the skirts being ankle length and shoulder pads galore! Once the skirts are shortened they look great. 85. I found your blog on Pinterest yesterday evening and was on it until1:00 am this morning, and didn’t want to stop then. I have been sewing since I was a little girl, learned from my mother, who made all mine and my siblings clothes. You have shown me things that I never even thought about before. The way you can take a skirt and make a dress out of it by just sewing seams up from the bottom and incorporate the sleeves in the same way, is something I would not have thought possible. I love the things you make out of these cast-offs. I, too, have searched thrift stores for clothing, but I usually just look for fabrics, buttons,or trim that I love and can possibly use. I had never thought of redoing them the way you do. You have a very creative mind and I admire the way you can see the things in these items that anyone else would never even imagine. You have inspired me to look at thrift store items in a completely different way, and even my own clothing that I thought I was going to have to discard. Good luck in your quest to finish this project and in all your future endeavors.

  88. Love your blog! I just finished my freshman year at USC and when I came across your blog today I thought “Hey, there’s a Revente in Columbia.” Imagine the surprise when I saw that’s actually where you are! I can’t wait to follow your amazing refashions!

  89. I found your blog through Pintrest and have been completely captivated for the last 2 hours reading and seeing your creations. I am completely inspired and can’t wait to hit up my thrift store and bust out my sewing machine. Thanks for sharing your talent, and the details of your life. I love your writing style and as long as your run this blog, I’ll be reading!

  90. You are like a fashion wizard or something! You have a very good eye and creative mind for recycling “rejected rejects”. It is awesome, what you’re doing. Now I’ll think more than twice before I throw away clothes, and scour my mom and grandmother’s closets for hidden treasures! 🙂

  91. I came across your blog yesterday afternoon and spent the whole time going through the posts for creative inspiration… I’ve recently lost 50lbs and all my old clothes are like tents so it’s nice to get some ideas so I can rehash my old favourites and celebrate my new body!

Keep up the good work, I’ll be checking in for a daily update in inspiration!

    I hope you’re well

  92. You are doing some great things here! I am a friend of Whitney and Mike’s and you and I have run into each other at a few events. Anyhow, I’ve sent your blog address along to my mom, who is a local artist that thrives on reusing waste. I think she’ll enjoy it! Her blog is leemalerich.blogspot.com

  93. So, I like other commenters have just recently dived into refashioning. I’ve always had to shop at thrift stores, and honestly didn’t mind because we always rooted out some awesome things, but now I’ve finally gotten to the point where I’m not taking clothes at face value, but seeing the potential to be so much better. Your blog has been inspirational, a source of some great ideas in how to update awesome (and some not so awesome) vintage pieces and I thank you for blogging! I have read every single entry all the way back to when you started and I check back daily to see what you’ve come up with for each new day. Love your blog and refashions and sending encouragement from Jersey!

  94. Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I’ve awarded you the Liebster Blog Award. I follow your blog and impressed with the creations you come up with from what others have discarded. I admire your commitment and dedication to being a recycler as well as a Good Samaritan. Keep up the good works. Your award is outlined in my blog.

  95. What a joy to come across your blog! I literally looked at every page from start to finish; such an inspiration. Really touching when I read the post about your Grandmother… I too lost mine a few years back and she is the one that made me want to sew. I have dabbled in sewing for a long time and have finally made the decision to start taking classes in January and I am more than thrilled. This just gave me the boost I needed! Thank you for sharing and for all that you have done to help a wonderful cause.
I wish you all the best!!

  96. I stumbled on this blog when I searched for re-fashion blogs on Google. This blog is awesome and I saw your creations are really cool, and very chic….and I can never tell them it’s refashioned if I don’t look at the “before.”
I also would like to do some refashioning and blog about it…..but the BIGGEST problem is I don’t know how to sew. But that is one of my top list things to do this year—to enroll in a sewing class and learn making pretty clothes like you do.
