Today’s dress is a Milly of New York dress. A super-expensive boutique (If you have to ask, you can’t afford it) gave it to Revente’s Last Call, who in turn gave it to me. As you can see, it had quite a few issues. :/
And of course there was this:
I have to admit, I was really disappointed in how craptastic the construction of this dress was. When I buy something new, especially if it’s expensive, I always turn it inside-out to see how well it is constructed. A price tag is meaningless in terms of quality nowadays. At least this boutique didn’t toss out this damaged dress.
My first step in fixing this dress was to try to hide those stains. I reached for a bottle of black Rit dye.
I only used about 1/3 of the bottle on this dress. I’m pretty conservative with my dye, because I don’t necessarily care what color it ends up being, just that it is a different color or just so the stain I’m trying to hide becomes unnoticeable. Also, dye can be pretty pricey.
I put my dress into its bath.
I was nervous about dyeing this dress. It was already pretty damaged, and I was afraid I was just going to make it worse. Plus, the washing instructions clearly stated “Dry Clean Only”. Whatever! Time to break all the rules (Mwahahahahaa!)! The dyeing process did make a few more holes, but I managed to hide the stains.
How nifty is that purple-ish hue? I certainly didn’t expect that! 🙂
I got to work on stitching restitching every single seam I could on the dress.
I’ve gotta say, I’m really happy with myself for being able to save this one!
