Ever since my delightful beach trip last week, I can’t get thoughts of the ocean out of my head! Perhaps that’s why I chose this $1 dress for today’s refashion.
I love the sea foamy hue, and check out these sweet buttons!!!
There were a lot of problems with this dress though. I hated all those stupid pearls on the neckline and pockets, there are some serious shoulder pad issues going on, and one of those sweet buttons is MIA! :/
My first order of business was to remove a few annoyances!
I was in a trouser mood, so the next thing I did was chop off a whole bunch of length!
This also meant that I wouldn’t have to deal with the missing button issue anymore. 🙂
I turned my soon-to-be jacket inside-out and got to pinning!

Then, I sewed along my pinned lines. After adding a hem to the bottom raw edge…
…I was all done! Now my jacket was ready to come with me to the opening party for the Indie Grits Film Festival at 701 Whaley! 🙂
While at 701, my buddy Erin and I headed upstairs to see what was in the gallery…
Our minds were sufficiently blown!
This exhibit is flippin‘ AWESOME, and if you’re in the Columbia area, you really need to check it out! The gallery has been made to look like a spaceship with tons of robots hiding everywhere!!! 🙂
Cheers!

Favorite!!!!
Love the pigtails!
I love your stuff but I wish that at the end of the post there was a picture of the before and after right next to each other. I’m constantly scrolling back and forth comparing the before and after pics. Just an idea:) Otherwise everything is AMAZING!!!!
I think this is your best one yet! Love it!
I wonder what you do with the shoulder pads? There must be tons of those things just laying around somewhere. I feel bad for them.
If you look through more of her pix you’ll see many of the things she’s done with spare shoulder pads, let alone all the spare fabric she lops off. She’s made mouse shaped, cat nip toys she donated to shelters, reusable dryer pads, handles for saucepans, glasses cases, etc. So don’t worry too much, but I really appreciate your thinking about them not going to waste!
I had no idea how you were going to make that dress look wearable. But a jacket was the perfect idea! It looks great.
SWEET!!!!! Great idea to turn it into a jacket!
ha! I think I may have sold that dress to someone back in the early 80’s at Happy Dashery!
