Day 357: Grown-Up Enough: DIY Asymmetrical Top Refashion

Day 358: Ruffled Dress Refashion
Day 356: Almost an Evening Dress

I almost didn’t want to bother with today’s piece.

Meh.

It might not look so bad at first glance, but look a bit closer.

First off, this dress is pretty unflattering on me, as I’m bigger on the bottom than I am up top.  It just doesn’t do anything for me.  :/

Also, it’s really worn out and faded.  🙁

It’s a little hard to see in photos…but look hard.

Let’s refashion this dress into an asymmetrical top!

Before I got to chopping, I reached for a box ‘o dye!

Feeling a bit green!

I left my dress in its dye bath for about 40 minutes, then gave it a rinse & dry.

So, now the fading has been taken care of, but what about the shape?

I decided I didn’t feel like wearing a dress today anyway, so I made a big chop!

Le Chop!

This dress is made of cotton jersey, so there was no need to hem that bottom edge, as it isn’t going to fray. 🙂

Now I have a fun Art Deco-ish asymmetrical top!  🙂

Muuuch more striking than that boring dress! 🙂

I turn up my nose at faded frocks! 🙂

This is what I wore to work today.  Yes…I am apparently incapable of dressing like a proper grown-up.

Grown Up in Disguise!

The way I see it is, work is grown-up enough!  Might as well surround yourself with as many fun things as possible!

Joe Don Baker keeps me motivated!

My sweet sock monkey earns the respect and admiration of my colleagues!

But perhaps this is silly.  Maybe the time has come to do away with childish things…

No one should have a puppet in their office, should they?

…or not.  🙂

Cheers!

  1. I kinda do the sort of the same thing with thrift store finds but I would’ve never thought of green dye! Some of my re-creations turn out so stupid that I throw them away but I had some cheap fun. And a few things I do wear in public.

I was at a loss as to what I should get my son for his birthday but now I know! A Joe Don Baker framed and autographed photo! I sure like yours. I looked on eBay but didn’t like anything so I’ll check back.

Love your pics (you are gorgeous) and descriptions.

  2. I love so many of your refashions, but this one is perfect. Who would have thought a wore out dress could be salvaged so perfectly.

  3. I’m being halfway serious when I ask: how much do you want for that shirt?

Haha but seriously, I can’t get over how much I love how that shirt turned out. I am in LOVE with the print and style and everything! Gimme!! <3

  4. Can you dye things in your washing machine & it wont hurt the machine or get onto anything else. I love the things you do, but I don’t think I could be so creative !

  5. I LOVE the last couple of your refashions! I also have a sock monkey, a breast cancer teddy bear and several princess crowns for days that I feel like a princess! No one is too old for these things – enjoy!

  6. Such a clever refashioning. I am currently losing weight and after losing 2 inches with a plan on 4 more can now see the possibilities for remaking my current wardrobe. Already ordered a dress form and am going to start investing in dye for sure! Have a new sewing machine, just gotta learn the new fancy things! Thanks so much for giving me so much inspiration and motivation! Sure hope that after just finding you about a week ago that you are going to keep on “Wowing” us.
