    Day 236: Fat Tuesday Top

When I first found this awful yellow dress, it left me feeling anything but mellow! The first issue I had to address (har har) was a couple of stains on the bottom half of the dress that I couldn’t get to photograph for the life of me.  Rest assured, they were pretty obvious in person and appeared to be of the coffee persuasion.  I decided to just lop that part off and make this dress into a top! I put…

Day 231: Boldly Going Nowhere Top

Today’s piece looks like it might have been some sort of uniform in a previous life. Neither that dress nor my locks were looking too great.  :/  And style wasn’t the only thing missing from this sad dress. The worst thing about this dress was its shapelessness, so I got to pinning! Then, I got to sewing! Then, I got to snipping! Now that frumpy dress is a cute new top that works perfectly with my pencil skirt!  I put…

Day 218: to Bea or Not to Bea Dress

When Fella saw me in this dress, he informed me that it made me look like a miniature Bea Arthur. While I’m a huge fan of Bea, and all her Golden Girl pals, I don’t think I should let them inform my style choices too much.  🙂 To get started, I ripped out some really strange shoulder paddage. Then, I made a great big chop! Do you see where I’m going here?  🙂 I folded that top part under twice,…

    Day 191: Scrap Bustin’ Top

All this refashioning has left me with a bunch of scraps!  Most of them are the cut off bottoms of dresses, like this one from Day 182: Scraps are pretty terrific.  There are all sorts of fun projects you can do to use them up.  I loved the pattern on this fabric, and decided to turn that scrap into a pretty drapey top!  🙂 First, I put it on my dress form and pinned it on each side where I…

Day 186: A Ruffled Tee Fit For Me!

Here’s another freebie that someone gave me.  It’s a nifty and super soft Ann Taylor tee, complete with a nifty ruffle on the front.  🙂 The only problemo with this tee is that it’s a few sizes too big.  Luckily, all it needs is a quick fix! I decided to take it in from the back.  I took it in about 2 inches. Then, I quickly sewed up a brand new seam! After lopping off that extra fabric, my tee…

Day 181: Every Scrap is Sacred

My good buddy, Lisa is teaching in China for a year.  One of the things she mentions about Chinese food is that there is very little waste involved.  You can read more about her foodie adventures here.  🙂  They try to use every part of the animal or vegetable.  I like this approach, as I hate wasting anything.  When I made my jacket for Day 178, I knew I’d have to do something with the bottom part.  🙂 I decided…
