Wannabe Wednesday: “Noten” Wrong With a No-Sew Maxi Skirt

A Sleeve Reprieve Dress
Crawfish Fest Top

A lot of you have been asking me to diversify my refashions by

A. Not just refashing dresses all the time and

B.  Doing a few longer/more modest refashes that would work for any body type (Personally, I think that if you like something you should just wear it as you probably look more awesome in it than you’re giving yourself credit for, but I digress).

Well, it’s your lucky day!

I needed something casual to wear for a cookout/movie night with some fabulously fun people.  I chose this!

Perfect, right?
Perfect, right?

See?  I’m fully-covered and ready to go!  πŸ™‚

Just kidding, folks!  πŸ˜‰

I was inspired by this skirt by Dries Van Noten:

She looks mad. :/
She looks mad. :/

I unbuttoned my dress just enough to make it fit around my hips, then tied the sleeves around my waist, tucking the collar in as I did so.

Here’s my version!

She chose a yellow blouse. I chose yellow shoes. It's all one. ;)

Here’s the designer version again:

And here’s mine:

Try as I might, I couldn’t find a price for the original skirt, so I can’t calculate my savings on this one.  πŸ™  BUT…I’m pretty sure it cost more than the $1 I spent on my version!

The weather was perfect, and I was happy for my full-coverage skirt as the mosquitoes are baaaaaa-aaaaack!  :/

Liz, the lovely hostess! :)

The food was delish!

The wine was even better!

This is one gentleman’s (not sure if he’d want me announcing his name AND the the fact that he’s going to be out of town on here) last supper here in Columbia for a few months, so we decided to commemorate the occasion appropriately!  πŸ™‚

Original Cost:  No idea.  :/

Copycat Cost:  $1

Savings:  Not a clue, but probably a good bit!

  1. I looked at price for this designer skirts and they are about 200 minimum so your savings were at least $199.00

  2. Last Supper re-enactment: B+!! {You only get an “A” if you have all of the characters. *ha ha*} πŸ˜‰

I must say, that original dress was probably THE most BORING item i have yet seen on your blog! I mean, WOW that thing is DULL!!!! …The refashed skirt, however, is terrific!! Black top & vivid yellow shoes set it off perfectly!! 😎

  3. Jillian, you have inspired me to re-learn to sew and attempt my own refashions! In fact, I sewed the graduation dress I am wearing in my pic! So THANKS for the inspiration. I really like not being limited to other people’s ideas of fashion.

Who’d have thought a shirt (or in this case a ginormous dress) would make such a cute skirt?! Love it! And I have to say, you have to some pretty fun friends.

  6. I love the skirt, & The Last Supper recreation! You do such creative & awesome refashions, Jillian, & I think a big reason they look so good on you is that (in addition to the fact that you are so adorable) you wear them with such confidence & flair! Thanks for inspiring us all to let our creativity loose!

  7. i think what you do is awesome!!! And i cant wait to go to the thrift shop to see what i can do to the clothes i get. I am young and i want to be a fashion designer and i have heard this is a great way to start and get your creative juices flowing!!!

  8. I usually don’t like the look of shirt-to-skirt with tied sleeves because it still looks like a shirt. That said…I like what you did with your copycat. Yours looks more like a skirt with a pretty waistline. It looks like the trick to make the style look more “skirty” and not “shirty” is the shirt style.

From what I’ve seen in the comments, it looks like there are requests to convert skirts to trousers. I can’t wait to see you tackle that one! πŸ™‚

  9. I love the last supper recreation! And, the skirt is awesome. Have you ever done a post about how much time you do thrifting? I would love to know more about how often you go out. You always find the best stuff.

  10. Okay Jillian, I’ve been following your blog for over a year now but this is the first time I’m posting and I’m doing it just to say….I LOVE your blog AND your refashions! This one was especially hysterical with the last supper photo and the skirt was great! I wish I could pick out $1 fashions the way you do with an eye for what they will become, but I look forward to seeing more great stuff and then I will hopefully find a way to do my own. πŸ™‚

  14. Thank you for not wearing a see-through shirt without the necessary pasties. Faux pas much? I love your version better, too! You’re very talented! Looking forward to something like maybe a vintage sheet into a long skirt?

Yes! This so much. Love the re-fash: it looks much less chilly than the original πŸ™‚

  16. Yours turned out so much better than the designer one– love it! And so simple… As a side note, not everyone who asks for more modest clothes has body-confidence issues; some people have religious reasons for wearing fuller-coverage stuff. One suggestion that I’ve seen for girls who don’t wear short skirts is to get a longer slip that has ruffles or lace layers at the bottom that extend beyond the hem of the skirt.

  17. Hey girl – I totally get what the other folks were saying, only because I have BIG boobs and there’s no way I can go without a bra, even though my hubby would prefer it! πŸ™‚ And you are all lean and slim and all, which makes everything you put on look fabulous! Your version of this is so much better than the original! Great work and LOVE the Last Supper photo!

  21. I love your comment that people should just wear what they like, I totally agree. What a neat re-fashion, never would have thought to just tie the sleeves. Love the recreation of the last supper too, very fun!

  27. I love the skirt and the Last Supper photo – genius! I love how you always show yourself wearing your refashions in your life (and not just in your bedroom/ house). You’re inspiring me to chop up more hideous charity shop finds!

  28. Hilarious! I think this is my favorite post AND refashion. Now, for the skirt…did you have to keep adjusting & re-adjusting it all night? That’s what I would be concerned about. As far as looks go, I liked yours much better than hers and those yellow shoes are super cool.I LOVE a maxi skirt.
I had one circle skirt that I tried to make into super wide leg pants but I failed and ruined my skirt argh! I sewed the center line up too high and even then the crotch looked a little puckered. Please one day will you refashion a full maxi skirt into a pair of palazzo pants??

  29. I’m so thrilled you a.) did a no-sew refashion b.) put it up while I was at lunch so I could read it and c.) did a totally awesome photo for me to enjoy:) Fun!

  30. Ahh I see, longer as in length, not longer as in time. Sorry for that one! Though, I’m still curious about the dress/skirt thing.

  31. Sooo… you addressed questions regarding longer refashions and ones that AREN’T dresses… with a no-sew refashion that is a skirt (i.e. half of a dress). Interesting choice. I know it’s your blog and everything, but if you’re going to ask for questions and address reader desires, my guess is you should do just that.

PS: no I didn’t submit those questions.

  32. Love this refashion!!! I was interested in the cost of the original…couldn’t find it πŸ™ but if it is a skirt (per cost of other skirts by this designer) it’s between $500-$1,000+ GASP!!! If it is a dress then it’s $800++ GULP!!! So I’d say you saved a penny or million πŸ˜€ BTW I love your friends table clothes! Are they actually clothes or fabric? And the flowers where very pretty!

  33. Agree with Samantha. I am not always a fan of the refashions where the sleeves are simply re-tied, but this one looks really great! Plus, those of us with a little more junk in the trunk could wear this one too!
